Bubble Milk Tea a.k.a Boba Tea has become a huge Malaysian delight with thousands of bubble tea stores popping up all over the country. Joining in on the Boba Tea craze, Qulu Qulu is Malaysia’s newest beverage company who is putting on a transformative twist on Boba Tea with Boba Kopi (coffee)!

Drawing inspiration from the golden days of kopitiams (traditional coffee shops), Qulu Qulu combines a classic Malaysian favourite, kopi, with the current trending beverage king, bubble milk tea, to recreate a classic Malaysian beverage with a dash of modernity. Using only traditionally dripped kopi from Nusantara coffee beans harvested from East Malaysia, the authentic flavours of the kopi are extracted the same way kopitiams have been doing it since the 18th century.

Set on engaging the nation’s biggest demographic – urban millennials, John Jong and Zain Amri, founders of Qulu Qulu were inspired by the boba craze that had thousands of Malaysians queueing up for hours for the sweet drink. Determined to stand-out in the ocean of sweet tea and pearls, John and Zain created the Kopi Monsters, Qulu Qulu – creatures that took root in Malaysian culture and bloomed from the delicious coffee bean.

“We looked around and saw the same thing being sold everywhere, and Malaysia has so many amazing ingredients that have not seen the limelight. So we thought – why not ride on the strong market demand for beverages, with an original and quintessentially Malaysian twist to it,” shared Zain.

Drawing inspiration from classic Malaysian culture, Qulu Qulu utilises ingredients which have been Malaysian favourites for centuries. Their signature drink, the Charm is a spinoff from the classic Malaysian beverage, cham, which is a mixture of both coffee and tea, a popular Malaysian beverage often taken along with breakfast. They also have the Haliya, which is a unique mix of kopi, ginger, and gula Melaka (palm sugar), and a total of 12 different beverages to choose from with plans to expand their beverage selection.

Qulu Qulu also strictly obtains their ingredients from locally sourced vendors, drawing attention to the potential of Malaysian agriculture, while supporting the local economy at the same time. Completely a Malaysian-based brand, Qulu Qulu aims to soar to greater heights by expanding across the country and have plans to set foot in neighbouring countries.
